MLK 2.0 - Art and Writing Contest (grades 3-12)


As part of our MLK 2.0 event series, the Livingston Diversity Council, in partnership with the Howell Carnegie Library and Huron-Clinton Metroparks, is having an Art and Writing Contest for area youth.

  • Open to students in grades 3-12 who reside within Livingston County, MI.

  • There are 3 age groups: Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8 & Grades 9-12

  • Create a written or artistic work in response to the following prompt:

    • for students in grades 3-5: How do you treat other people as MLK Jr treated others?

    • for students in grades 6-8 & 9-12: Creating harmony in our community in the spirit of MLK Jr

  • Students must submit their creations to the Howell Carnegie Library, 314 W. Grand River Ave., Howell, MI, during regular business hours, between 9 am Monday, December 11, 2023, and 7 pm on January 8, 2024.

  • A three-person panel will judge the works based on visual appearance, content, and quality. 

  • The winners, one per age group, will be notified on January 11, 2024. Winners will receive a $100 Visa gift card. 

  • Winners will read or share their creations at the start of the "Legacy and Liberation" program held at the First Presbyterian Church of Howell on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 6:00 pm.

  • The library will display all entries in the Youth Department between January 14 and January 31, 2024.

  • Immediate family members of library staff and board are ineligible for prizes. 

  • Students interested in participating in the MLK Art and Writing Contest can explore this list of resources for inspiration.

Submission Requirements:

  • Name, phone, email, grade.

  • It must be either a written entry (poem, essay, etc.) or an artistic entry (painting, drawing, photograph, sculpture, etc.). Submissions are not limited to these examples but must be a physical creation appropriate for display.

  • Written submissions must be under 3 minutes long (when read) and no larger than 11”x17”.

  • Artistic submissions must be no larger than 36.5” linear inches (length + width + height).

  • Works will be on display in the library's Youth Department and should be appropriate for viewing by all ages.
