National Coming Out Day

Members of the Pride Alliance of Livingston were featured on the WHMI Viewpoint segment that aired on Sunday, October 6th with some education and awareness on how to support our LGBTQ+ community on this National Coming Out Day. National Coming Out Day is celebrated every year on October 11th.Originating in 1988, October 11th was designated as National Coming Out Day in recognition of the second major National March on Washington for Lesbian & Gay Rights which took place in 1987. With estimates of half a million people participating, it was nearly five times the size of the first march in 1979.

The foundational belief is that fear and misinformation thrives in an atmosphere of silence and ignorance, and that once people know that they have loved ones who are lesbian or gay, they are far less likely to maintain homophobic or oppressive views.

What is important to recognize is that sometimes it is not safe for someone to come out and identify themselves as LGBTQ+, so while this self-identifying action is encouraged, we are also empowering people, businesses and organizations to come out as an ally to the LGBTQ+ community.
